Set in 1999, the story begins with two college students on a road trip to the site of Shepard's death - one in search of his boyfriend, who has disappeared, the other the journalism student he asks to join him and tell his story. It is the shocking discovery they find there, however, that reveals a deeper layer to the mystery and changes the course of their investigation. Though the book undoubtedly creates awareness and raises important questions about LGBT rights, it paints the story's historical backdrop in a way that avoids making it a book purely about issues. Its characters are distinct, likeable individuals whose past and present struggles ring true to the reader and create a sense of both sympathy and identification. The story itself, though containing more backstory than some readers may be used to, is well-paced with a sense of suspense that makes for a page-turning read that leads to a cathartic and startling conclusion.
